Red Deer College Focuses on Attracting People to the Central Alberta Area with New Facilities & Programs

The Red Deer College (RDC) President Joel Ward recently gave the keynote address at the annual State of the College Address.

The College is focusing on shifting to a Polytechnic University as well as opening major NEW buildings and facilities. The result of this, attracting a strong workforce of people to Central Alberta.

As well, The Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre will open and shape the future of the College, creating new spaces to increase and enhance programming, while also providing students with applied opportunities through in-class learning and practicum experiences.

Start packing

It may sound crazy to start packing months in advance of your move, but since you'll eventually need to do this anyway, you might as well get organized now. While there’s still snow on the ground, Albertans can set their sights on warmer weather and book their summer campsites through Alberta Parks’ popular online reservation site.

Campers can log on to https://reserve.albertaparks.ca/ to book their group camping areas. Comfort camping reservations opened Feb. 12 at 9 a.m., while regular, individual campsite reservations for the May long weekend start Feb. 20.

The town of Sylvan Lake, Alta., west of Red Deer is planning a major redevelopment of its waterfront as it hopes to bring in more visitors and boost business in the town.

The Reimagine Sylvan plan will guide one of the most significant changes in the town's history, making sure it stays relevant and attractive to both businesses and tourists.

A big component in shaping the future of the town will be deciding what should be built on the site of the old Wild Rapids Water Park. It closed in 2016 after 34 years, leaving a vacant space in a prime location.

The City of Red Deer is holding an open call for musicians to take the stage on the Ross Street Patio this summer.

Musicians are invited to apply for a performance opportunity at one of three Friday summer concerts scheduled for June 15th, July 13th and August 10th from 6 -10 p.m. Submissions will be assessed based on quality and originality of performance as well as audience interaction and engagement. This call is open to all, although preference will be given to Red Deer and Red Deer County residents. All genres are encouraged to submit and there is no submission fee.
