6 Winter Activities To Do in Red Deer

Red Deer has an abundance of family activities to do during the winter. Here is just a few popular activities to do in our beautiful city. 

 Ice Skating

The City of Red Deer sets up 76 outdoor ice rinks every year. These rinks are easily found in each community. Most communities offer a rink set up for playing hockey and rink dedicated just for skating. Bower Ponds is the perfect place for family and friends to gather. Here you can enjoy endless skating on the pond and you can warm up by the camp fire. Skate Rentals and skate sharpening are available. Food available on site as well.

 Winter Festivals

Check out the following festivals that Red Deer has to offer. The Festival of the Trees kicks of the Christmas Season and is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year. The Red Deer Winter Carnival is organized by the French Canadian Association of Red Deer. Here you will enjoy live music, outdoor games for the children and you can sample some French Canadian pea soup and maple syrup taffy on snow.

 Downhill Skiing / Snowboarding / Tubing 

Red Deer is home of Alberta’s Largest Non-Mountain Family Ski Area. Canyon Ski Resort has 22 runs to choose from. Want to try snow tubing? No problem Canyon Ski Resort Also has two lifts dedicated with two runs for Snow Tubing. Canyon Ski Resort also provides equipment rentals and ski lessons. 

 Cross Country Skiing

Within the city boundaries Red Deer offers about 30 kms of cross-country skiing trails. Trails can be found at Great Chief Park / Kiwanis Ski Trails, Heritage Ranch, Barrett Park, and River Bend Golf and Recreation Park. For more information and maps click here.

 Sleigh Rides

Heritage Ranch offers a “Winter Night Light Tour” which is a sleigh ride which brings you through their holiday light display. This is a great idea for something to do after dinner and you just want to relax.

 Ice Fishing

Although Red Deer itself does not have any lakes we are in very close proximity to a few lakes that offer fantastic opportunity for ice fishing. Sylvan Lake is about 20kms to the west of Red Deer and Gull Lake is about 30kms North West of Red Deer. Fish species include Northern Pike, Walleye, Burbot, Whitefish, and Yellow Perch.
