It’s almost Family Day weekend!  

We’re just as hyped as you are to go around Central Alberta for all the Family events lined up this weekend.

If you haven’t arranged anything yet, worry not because we’ve got you, fam! We have a list here of enjoyable outdoor activities that will surely make your family day a blast.  

Winterfests, sleigh rides, ice fishing derby, or whatever is up your alley, check out this list of events that Central Alberta offers from February 19 to 21 to make this day extra special for you and your whole brood.

1. Sylvan Lake Winterfest x The BIG JIG 

The lake is a perfect spot to spend time with your family this weekend. Fun and exciting events are lined up from February 19 to 21 with the Big Jig ice fishing derby as the major event. Join the fishing tournament for a chance to take home the $3,000 grand prize. They also have other tournament categories with prizes ranging from $100 to $750.  

The Kinabik Discovery Village is also available for sledge hockey, snow bikes, snowshoes, curling, bean bag toss, tug of war, and sleigh ride.  

Learn to fish, try out a 1,400 sq ft snow maze, enjoy a fire on ice and fireworks show, or play outdoor games all for free. Check out visitsylvanlake.ca for more details.

2. Red Deer Weekend Sleigh Ride and Brunch 

Visit Red Deer’s Jewel this weekend and enjoy a sleigh ride & brunch package for 2 of you or for a household family of up to 6.  

The Heritage Ranch, at 6300 Cronquist Dr, Red Deer, AB, offers a 15-minute private sleigh ride for your group, from February 19 to 20.  

Upon return, you can pick up your ready-to-go brunch package featuring 12 Hour Smoked Brisket Eggs Benedict, Smashed Potatoes, Sausage, Double Smoked Bacon, Scrambled Eggs and MultiGrain Toast.  (Kids menu doesn't include eggs benedict).

3. Red Deer Home on the Range 

Explore the west this Family Day with cattle culture and crafts at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery on February 21, 2022, 1 to 4 pm.   

Dress up like you’re in the wild, wild west and enjoy all the activities offered by Red Deer Mag featuring a Family Day Colouring Contest for a chance to win a MAG family membership or one of the Art in a Bag art kits of your choosing!  

Be delighted with the exhibits Ya Ha Tinda - The Ranch by Lacombe artist Arto Djerdjerian showcasing horses, people, mountains and history in his photographs, and Our West Country by Lynn LeCorre, Kate More, Larry Reese, Judy Sutter, and Susan Woolgar featuring the Eastern Slopes of Alberta.  

You may also have fun by stamping and branding onto public murals, making a hobby horse and racing it outdoors, and learning how to make rope using a rope maker.  

Lastly, you may enjoy outdoor guided hours of Heritage Square and more!

4. Blackfalds Winterfest 

There are more Winterfests around Central Alberta. In Blackfalds, they feature a free family skate in the new arena and a BBQ put on by the Blackfalds Fire Department.   

Ice sculptors carving ice sculptures at the front of the EBC on Sunday and Monday will be present as well.  

This event is for free and will be held at the Eagle Builders Centre, Blackfalds on February 21, Monday. Check out Blackfalds’ community events calendar for more details.

 5. Crimson Lake Winterfest  

In Rocky Mountain House, a Winterfest will be taking place at the Pioneer Camp Ranch!  

Have fun with carnival games, sleigh rides, bonfires, snowshoeing and more from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm, Saturday, February 19, for free.  

Witness the participants of the Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Dip brave the cold as they dunk in the cold waters of Crimson Lake for a good cause!  

Enjoy a family lunch and hot drinks at the Pioneer Ranch Concession.

6. Family Day swim at the Town of Olds 

Have a Family Day fun at the Olds Aquatic Centre, located at 5303 46 Avenue, Olds, for a Family Day swim from 1 to 4 pm on February 21. The Sportsplex is, meanwhile, also running the Shinny Hockey, Public Skat, and Skating time for Figure Skaters ONLY. Check out Olds Town Events for more details.
